Sunday 15th July – relax then bike **** Hurst to Sway – sunny and
hot.
A nice quiet night at Hurst and again wake to wall to wall sunshine, will
this good weather never end. With not many people about Mag decided to do
her exercises on the path behind the van at 7.30 before it gets busy and
the Roe deer is still in the field with the black sheep! I get up too and
do my exercises then breakfast outside and just sit and watch the world go
by all morning as the tide comes in and the parking spaces disappear,
mainly with people with canoes and SUP’s. Mag then packs a picnic; egg
sandwiches and we are about to leave on the bikes when the tide starts to
cover the road which is prone to flooding at 12.45. We hold off leaving
just to make sure the van is going to be alright, have a chat with the
neighbour and discover this is only their second time away in the van. It
is good fun watching the water nearly reach the van wheels as cars drive
through the water but it soon stops so we get on our way. There are not
that many options left for a bike ride from there as we did the best route
yesterday but we found an inland route to Sway where some friends live and
we have actually had tea in their cottage. You start on the Solent Way to
Keyhaven before turning up lley Lane. We went up a variety of paths, roads
and forest tracks but eventually found a sign for Sway which was only a
couple of miles. We knew we were nearly there when we crossed a cattle grid
into the large area of dried up heathland but there were horses with foals
everywhere, mainly dancing around in the road holding up the traffic!!! We
biked a short way across the heath before finding a shaded spot which we
shared with loads of horses and had the yummy egg sandwiches. We then took
the roads back to Millford on Sea, did the cliff path again and back to the
van. The sea breeze had picked up again and there was a kitesurfer in the
open sea and several more over by Hurst Castle. We had been out 3 hours 40
minutes covering another 16 miles, not our best bike ride but it was great
to see the New Forest Ponies:) Things have quietened down at Hurst although
the campers still keep coming but this will be our last night here, we are
in need of a shop and there is a hint of an afternoon breeze on Monday and
Tuesday so might head to Weymouth but am not sure yet???
